84 JORALEMON STREET BROOKLYN, N.Y.

Architecture/Reno: Steering House
Interior Design: Erin Fearins, CWB

Proudly featured on the 2013 Brooklyn Heights house tour.

When the new homeowners signed the contract to buy this beautiful landmarked yet very outdated Brooklyn Heights townhouse they knew a substantial renovation would be necessary to meet the needs of their modern family. After presenting a number of configuration options with varying degrees of invasiveness the intrepid homeowners opted for a major structural reworking of the house to create an open layout for their kitchen, dining and living space on the garden level. To accomplish this we replaced the load bearing walls with a heavy steel frame that was embedded in the ceiling so that no ceiling height or character was sacrificed in the process. In addition, we added central air conditioning, reworked a few bathrooms and designed their dream kitchen which has quickly become the heart of this newly modernized historic home.
