Tompkins Place ITALIANATE

Rear, vertical, and underground expansion maximizes this landmark’s functionality

The gut renovation of this historic townhouse included a major expansion of the property while preserving its architectural significance. The two-story rear addition and a new rooftop penthouse took advantage of all available FAR. The cellar was excavated and underpinned to add a home gym and wine cellar, with lowered floor joists achieving 9-foot ceilings for a spacious garden level. In addition to construction management, Steering House led the architecture phase and navigated the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s approval process. The renovated home blends modern systems and high-end finishes with the townhouse’s historic charm, resulting in a beautifully expanded, contemporary home. At the time of sale in 2024, the home set a new pricing record for the neighborhood.
